  • Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer-EBT) for 2024

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 authorized a permanent, nationwide Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT) program for eligible families beginning in 2024. The state of Minnesota, in a joint effort between the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) and Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) is pleased to announce plans to implement this new federal Summer EBT program in summer 2024. The Summer EBT program provides families with school-aged children eligible for free or reduced-price school meals $40/month per child ($120 total) during the summer months to purchase healthy foods with funds placed on EBT cards.

Parents/Guardians who are directly certified or categorically eligible or have an approved NSLP (lunch application) on file with their school will automatically qualify for this benefit (NO ACTION IS REQUIRED).

Parents/Guardians who have not completed a lunch application for the 2023-2024 school year are encouraged to fill one out and get it submitted prior to the end of the school year.  All applications must be dated and approved prior to August 23, 2024 to be eligible for the 2024 Summer EBT benefit.

Lunch applications are available here:  2023-24 Lunch Application

Free School Meals for Kids Signed Into Law!

Starting this school year (2023-2024), we are joining Minnesota's Free School Meals Program.  Although no lunch application is required to receive this free meal benefit, filling out the lunch application is still important!  Your child(ren) may qualify for other benefits like reduced fees at school.  Your application may also help the school qualify for education funds, discounts, and other meal programs.

Lunch applications are available here:  2023-24 Lunch Application

In order for students to receive a free Breakfast they must select at least 3 food items, including 1/2 cup fruit and/or vegetable to make it a reimbursable (free) meal.

In order for students to receive a free Lunch they must select 1/2 cup fruit and/or vegetable, plus at least 2 other full components to make a reimbursable (free) meal.

If students do NOT select the required amounts, they will be charged for every item on their tray.

What's the difference between a food component and food item?

food component is one of the required food groups (fruit, vegetable, grains, meat/meat alternate and milk).

food item is a specific food offered.  For example, a hamburger patty on a bun is one food item with two of the five food components (meat & grains).

Healthy Choices in Our School Cafeterias

  • Offer vs. Serve

Offer vs. Serve is a provision in the lunch program that allows students the option of declining some of the food offered.  This system is designed to decrease food waste while offering flexibility to students.  Students may refuse a food item.  When a student can make choices, they are more likely to eat what they select.  We encourage students to select all food items.  Parents and other adults can help teach children how to make healthy food choices.

If your child(ren) qualifies for the Free & Reduced Lunch Program, they are encouraged to take the reimbursable meal being offered in the lunch line or they will be charged for each food item on their tray.
What is a reimbursable meal under the National School Lunch Program?  The USDA Food & Nutrition states that each child must have 3 of the 5 food components  on their tray to make it a reimbursable meal.   Of the 3 required food components, 1 of the components must be 1 cup of fruit and/or vegetables.  (ex. 5 food components consist of:  Fruit, Vegetable, Grains, Meat/Meat Alternate, Milk)

Offer vs. Serve requirements for Lunch

    • A student must take a minimum of 3 out of 5 food items.
    • All meals have a standard price.  For example:  if a student takes 3, 4 or 5 food items, they will be charged the flat school lunch rate.
    • A student may take a smaller portion of a declined item.
