Healthy Choices in Our School Cafeterias
-
Pierz school cafeterias are meeting challenging new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat, trans fat and portion size. Our school lunches feature:
• Age-appropriate calorie limits.
• Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce).
• A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes.
• 2% milk low fat free chocolate milk.
• More whole grains.
• And less sodium.
Students will see a limit on the bread/grain items now served, stricter control on meat/meat alternate (protein) serving sizes, and generous fruit and/or vegetable servings.
Let's work together to be sure that children adopt the kind of healthful eating habits and lifestyles that will enable them to live longer, more productive lives.
If your child(ren) qualifies for the Free & Reduced Lunch Program, they are required to take the reimbursable meal being offered in the lunch line or they will be charged for each component/item on their tray. Please encourage your child(ren) to take every component being offered in the lunch line.
*What is a reimbursable meal under the National School Lunch Program? The USDA Food & Nutrition states that each child must have 3 of the 5 components on their tray to make it a reimbursable meal. Of the 3 required components, 1 of the components must be a fruit and/or vegetable. (ex. 5 food components consist of: Fruit, Vegetable, Grains, Meat/Meat Alternate, Milk)Nondiscrimination statement:
